May 2, 2009 - The recent swine flu outbreak has prompted a large number of inquiries as to the effectiveness of silversol against the infecting virus. The situation continues to evolve and according to the World Health Organization, 15 countries have officially reported 615 cases. It is appropriate to take time to educate on this topic and provide possible recommendations for staying healthy. Swine influenza, also called swine flu refers to a viral strain that usually infects pigs. It is common in certain parts of the US and in many other parts of the world. Transmission from pigs to humans is not common and eating pork does not pose a risk of infection. People with significant exposure to pigs are at risk and once infected, may pass the virus to other humans. The symptoms caused by swine flu are similar to general flu symptoms and may cause fever, chills, sore throat, aching muscles and weakness, coughing and general malaise. The current outbreak of swine flu is due to a new strain of influenza A subtype H1N1 which appears to be a combination of human, avian and swine strains. Though the outbreak was first reported in Mexico, the origin of this new strain is unknown. It appears to transmit readily from human to human.
To understand whether or not silversol may be helpful in the fight against the swine flu, it is helpful for you to understand what viruses are made of and how they reproduce. Viruses themselves are not living cells like the ones they attack in our bodies. They cannot reproduce on their own and do not grow or undergo division. They are efficient parasites that invade healthy cells and use them like a factory to produce more viral particles. They are so small that they can only be seen with an electron microscope. The influenza virus is roughly spherical in shape and consists of a core of genetic material surrounded by a protective shell of protein called a capsid. Inserted on to the surface of the viral particle are “spikes” made up of proteins and sugars which determine the type and subtype, for instance, Influenza A subtype H1N1 as mentioned earlier. The viral particles cause disease by invading healthy host cells and using its machinery to produce more viruses. The newly made viruses then leave the host cell and proceed to infect other cells.

This mechanism appears to be effective regardless of the subtype of the viral particle. Laboratory studies of the H5N1 strain in mice showed that 60% of those with infections survived compared with 30% in the placebo treated controls. The study concluded that the effect was strongly suggestive that a disease inhibitory effect had occurred. Silversol gel has been shown to disinfect topically and keep hands sanitized for 4 hours. I am in agreement with American Biotech Labs that silversol liquid and gel products should be considered for use against swine flu.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention website is tracking US human cases of H1N1 flu infections by state. They have provided excellent guidelines on what you can do to stay healthy and their website is updated regularly as information becomes available. The World Health Organization is tracking and reporting international human cases. In the Science Daily publication from May 2, 2009, the US Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission are warning the public to be cautious of websites and promotions that claim to diagnose, treat, prevent, mitigate or cure the H1N1 influenza virus. They urge consumers to contact their health care providers or legitimate medical supply services if they have questions or concerns.
